How to Regrow Hair With Medications

It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female hair loss can have a dramatic effect on your life. These days there are medications for hair loss that can help slow down thinning of hair and improve upon the hair you already have.

Even though hair loss medications can help in some situations, important to not expect any miracles from taking them. With whatever drug you use for a treatment you must commit to it for at lest 3 months so you can see if it really helped you regrow some of your hair.

The thing about taking medications is that when you stop taking them you might lose most or all of the hair you probably gained from taking the medication as prescribed. The idea of taking pills for your scalp each day for the rest of your life can feel very discouraging. This is one of the reasons why a lot of people losing their hair want to know how to regrow hair the natural way.

But if you’re fine with taking pills daily then give them a try. In this article we’re going to cover some of the most popular and most helpful medications known for treating hair loss and regrowing hair.

Finasteride

how to regrow hair

Finasteride is one of the most commonly used medications for hair loss. This drug is usually prescribed to men to help with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). Also known as propecia or proscar, finasteride helps with hair loss by inhibiting the enyzyme (5a-reductase) that causes the production of DHT.

This drug was originally used for prostate and urinary problems. By decreasing DHT finasteride helps make the prostate gland smaller, which leads to less urinary issues.

How It Works

An increase in the male hormone DHT will shorten the growth phase of the hair cycle and lead to hair loss. There are cells in your body that converts the other male sex hormone testosterone into DHT. To help this conversion take place an enzyme referred to as 5-alpha reductase is used.

Finasteride blocks the 5AR enzyme and reduces how much DHT is created. Just 1 mg of finasteride daily can help lower 3/4 of your DHT levels. You will have to keep taking this medication in order to maintain results or your hair will fall out again.

Can Women Take Finasteride?

When it comes to hair loss treatment for women finasteride isn’t approved by the FDA and isn’t recommended by many doctors. There have been a few studies on using finasteride for female hair loss and some have shown positive results but more studies need to be done.

Side Effects

With any hair loss medication you decide to take you have to expect side effects. The most commonly seen side effects among men who take finasteride daily are sexual. Problems staying erect and low sexual desire are just a couple of the sexual side effects a man taking this drug might experience.

Although it rarely happens, another possible side effect a man may experience is enlarged breasts. Other possible adverse effects include: mood swings, rashes, and itching.

Dosage

Start off taking 1mg daily and if you notice any of the side effects mentioned above reduce your daily dosage or discontinue taking them. You can take it at any time during the day, but we recommend taking it first thing in the morning while your testosterone levels are high.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil was the first medication approved by the FDA for hair loss treatment. Unlike finasterine, minoxidil is applied topically to the scalp. What a lot of people like about this medication is that it can be obtained over the counter without a prescription from a doctor. This medication was first used to reduce high blood pressure.

How it Works

It’s not clear how it works, but most experts strongly believe that it helps increase blood flow to the hair follicles by expanding blood vessels when applied to the scalp. The 5% solution of minoxidil seems to work the best for slowing down hair loss and regrowing hair. It may take up to 6 months to notice a real difference in your hair from using Minoxidil, and if you stop using it you’ll lose the results you achieved.

Can Women Use Minoxidil

The 2% solution is often used for a hair loss treatment for women. However, this medication doesn’t work with all women.

Side Effects

The most common side effect associated with using minoxidil is irritation or an allergic skin reaction on the scalp where it is applied. Women who use it for hair loss may sometimes experience more facial hair growing too.

How to Use It

The best way to use minoxidil for hair loss is to apply it directly to your scalp and thinning areas a couple times each day. Check out the video below:

Dutasteride

how to regrow thinning hair

Dutasteride is a DHT inhibitor that is often used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It’s also used to help treat enlarged prostate glands.

How it Works

Some believe that dutasteride works at blocking the 5AR enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT better than finasterine, which works the same way.  A 2.5mg dosage of dutasteride was found to be more effective than 5mg finasteride.

Side Effects

Side effects that cause problems sexually are the most common type of effects users experience with this medication. Pregnant women should stay away from taking dutesteride.

Dosage

We recommend start off taking one 0.5mg dutasteride capsule daily for hair loss. You can take this medication with or without food. Always consult your doctor first before taking any medications.

 Combining Medications

They work great together because finasteride will inhibit the activity of DHT, and minoxidil will strengthen your hair follicles. We’ve talked to several of our subscribers who started seeing better results when started taking both on a daily basis.
